From the archives… The remains of a minor steam eruption at SW Washington’s Mt. St. Helens.

Dateline: October 27, 2004 in the vicinity of Coldwater Ridge volcano observatory, at closing time (note brake lights of the last two cars leaving the observatory parking lot.)

It looks peaceful from here, but it didn’t feel that way at the time. This was taken from inside the …reassuringly named (? not) “blast zone” — ground zero as it were. In the event of another catastrophic eruption every life form inside this area (including me) would be incinerated… a thought which helped um… focus my attention on the crater so tightly that I don’t remember seeing the two deer on the lower left corner of the frame. They seemed puzzled, probably more concerned about my intentions, never mind the volcano…

I recently reworked this image for color,  detail and dynamic range.  (Click on image if you’d like to order prints)
