I don’t usually stop for ducks but there was something different about this one. As I walked along the shores of a small lake in the woods, I looked at it through a medium telephoto lens and saw the unusual ‘do’, the pointed bill… A little research showed that this is no ordinary duck but a Common Merganser (Female).

I find the designation “common” rather puzzling since I’d never seen one before. Or perhaps it is more accurate to say that I had seen but not noticed…(?)

This is part of the appeal of Nature photography; it helps me see the world with renewed appreciation for its beauty and diversity.
